The Dangers And Misuse of Sedative-Hypnotic Drugs

Sedative-hypnotic drugs, or depressants consist of barbiturates, Nembutal, Amytal, Seconal, and Phenobarbital slow down the brain activity in a person. These drugs are also called downers and can be very dangerous if taken in quantity or mixed with other drugs or alcohol.

If a person uses these types of drugs on a regular basis, a 'drug tolerance' can develop where the body adjusts to them, and it takes a higher and higher dose of the drug to hit a 'high.' This will cause a dependence on the drug to develop, which means that more of the drug is needed again and again, and if the drug is stopped suddenly, there can be sever withdrawal symptoms that can occur.

While there are legitimate reasons for take these drugs as prescribed, taking them in any other way than from a doctor's supervised treatment can be very dangerous. For example, barbiturates are used in surgical situations to help with anesthesia and they are also used for the treatment of anxiety and seizures.

It can be extremely dangerous for a person to use barbiturates to 'get high' because there is a very small tolerance between a desired dose of the drug and and an overdose. It only takes a small miscalculation to get to the point where respiratory distress can occur, which can lead to restricted breathing, an coma, and even death. It is also possible to have violent seizures which can lead to death.

Ingesting these drugs in combination with one another can be a disaster as well, as some people will take them in combination to reach a new 'high' or to counter unpleasant effects from another drug. The repercussions can also be very bad in cases such as this.

Substance abuse in this category of the sedative drugs, is a very scary path to travel, and it results in many deaths with people taking the drugs in an unsupervised way.
